A polymer is a substance or material made up of very large molecules or macromolecules composed of many repeating subunits. Because of their wide range of properties, both synthetic and natural polymers play an essential and ubiquitous role in everyday life.

Some of the properties of polymers are:

• Reflectivity: Some polymers are used to make reflective films that are used in a variety of lighting technologies.
• Impact resistance: Rugged plastics that withstand rough handling are ideal for luggage, protective covers, bumpers and more.
• Brittleness: Some forms of Styrofoam are hard and brittle and easily deformed when exposed to heat.
• Translucency: Transparent polymers are often used for arts and crafts.
• Ductility: Ductile polymers can be deformed without falling apart.

Elasticity: Natural and synthetic rubbers have elastic properties that make them ideal for car tyres and similar products.
