Bile Acid Metabolite Library of Standards

Bile Acid/Carnitine/Sterol Metabolite Library of Standards (BACSMLS) is a collection of high-quality bile acids, carnitines and sterols. Metabolite libraries make it simple to locate hundreds of metabolites in metabolomics analysis, most commonly used in metabolite qualification and quantification for MS and phenotypic screening.

Bile acids are biologically important small molecules that the liver produces bile acids and they are found predominantly in the bile of mammals and other vertebrates. About 80% of the organic compounds in bile are bile acids and the remainder is made up of phospholipids and cholesterol. Bile acids are conjugated with taurine or glycine residues to give anions called bile salts. Once secreted into the lumen of the intestine, bile salts are modified by gut bacteria. The gut bacteria partially dehydroxylates the bile acids and removes and their glycine and taurine groups to produce secondary bile acids.

Bile acids regulate various metabolic processes including triglyceride, cholesterol, glucose and energy homeostasis. Bile acids also have hormonal actions throughout the body, aid in the mobility and reduction of bacterial flora found in the small intestine and biliary tract. The disruption of processes in involved in the metabolism or circulation of bile acids has been linked to disorders of the intestine such as colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Because of the importance of bile acids especially in the maintenance of microbiota health, bile acids are receiving a great deal of attention.
