phyproof® Medicinal Mushroom Standards

Whether for quality control in the field of botanicals, herbal medicinal products, pet food and cosmetics or for pharmacological research: We have expanded our outstanding portfolio of highly purified phyproof® reference standards with important markers of the medicinal mushroom Hericium erinaceus, commonly known as Lion's Mane, monkey head mushroom, bearded hedgehog, or bearded tooth fungus. In German, it is called Igelstachelbart or Affenkopfpilz, in French Pom-Pom blanc, in Spanish Melena de león, in Chinese hóutóugū, and in Japanese Yamabushitake.[1]

Besides H. erinaceus, other species, such as the comb coral mushroom (H. coralloides), the tiered tooth fungus (H. cirrhatum), or the bearded fir spike (H. flagellum) can be found in Europe. Their generic name translated from the Latin word (h)ericius (hedgehog) and refers to the soft spines which cover the fruiting body.[1] These edible mushrooms grow as wood-decaying white rot fungi on fresh dead wood. Due to their rarity, they are protected in the wild.[2]

Luckily, they are suitable for cultivation and due to their richness in valuable nutrients they are increasingly used in food supplements. With their nutritional substances, including β-glucans, polysaccharides, triterpenes, vitamins, and minerals, Hericium species are considered as medicinal mushrooms.[3-5] The health effects of H. erinaceus have been assigned to its content in β-glucanes, triterpenes, phenolic compounds, and the unique Hericenes and Hericenones.[3]
