Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are natural compounds found in certain plants, known for their potential toxicity and hepatotoxic effects. They are characterized by a unique chemical structure consisting of a pyrrolizidine nucleus, which gives them their name.

PAs act as a defense mechanism in plants and can be found in various plant parts.
Chronic exposure to PAs has been linked to liver damage and an increased risk of liver cancer. Humans can be exposed to PAs through several routes, including the consumption of contaminated food and herbal products, inhalation of pollen or dust from PA-containing plants, and even through contact with the skin.

Contamination of food products can occur when PAs are present in crops due to contamination during cultivation, harvesting, or processing. Honey is another potential source of PA exposure, as bees may collect nectar from PA-containing plants.
