# Monkeypox Epidemic Tracking #

According to the US CDC statistics, as of June 23, a total of 3504 confirmed monkeypox cases in 44 countries. The UK has the highest number of cases with 793. The British Health Security Agency issued a notice that monkeypox has been listed as a notifiable infectious disease since June 8.

 

The Monkeypox Virus (MPXV) 

The monkeypox virus (MPXV) has two different infectious virions: the mature Virion (MV) and the enveloped Virion (EV). When the virus infects the host cell, the E8L protein on the MV surface binds to the chondroitin sulfate on the cell surface. A30L is an envelope protein for cell-cell fusion and syncytial formation. In addition, on the surface of EV, the envelope glycoprotein A35R is predicted to affect the intercellular diffusion of virions. The combination of A29L with heparin on the cell surface promoted the fusion of viral and host plasma membranes. B21R on EV has also several key immuno-dominant epitopes. Therefore, these proteins as essential targets are the focus of monkeypox virus research.
