Blood-brain barrier - not all barriers must be overcome

The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a highly selective semipermeable border of endothelial cells that prevents solutes in the circulating blood from non-selectively crossing into the extracellular fluid of the central nervous system where neurons reside. It thus decides which substances enter the protected area of the CNS and which do not. The BBB results from the selectivity of the tight junctions between the endothelial cells of brain capillaries, restricting the passage of solutes.
Dysfunction of the BBB can be both the cause and the consequence of neurological diseases.. You can find a selection of our antibodies against marker proteins of the BBB here.

New polyclonal antibody against ZO-1 which is perfectly suited for fresh frozen IHC

ZO-1 (also known as TJP1) is a peripheral membrane phosphoprotein with a molecular mass of 220 kDa, that is expressed in tight junctions of both epithelial and endothelial cells. It occurs exclusively on the cytoplasmic side of the tight junctions where it interacts with occludin and proteins of the claudin familiy as well as with the actin filaments of the cytoskeleton. Thus, it connects the tight junctions to the cytoskeleton and contributes to its stability. The new affinity-purified Guinea polyconal antibody shows excellent results in WB, ICC and fresh frozen IHC.

Indirect immunostaining of methanol postfixed mouse brain fresh frozen section with Guinea pig anti-Tight junction protein ZO-1 antibody (cat. no. 474 005, dilution 1 : 500, red) and mouse anti-Aquaporin 4 antibody (cat. no. 429 011, dilution 1 : 500, green). Nuclei have been visualized by DAPI staining (blue).

Superior Guinea pig polyclonal antibody against p-Glycoprotein 1

P-glycoprotein (Pgp) is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of transport proteins that utilize ATP to translocate a variety of lipophilic substrates across biological membranes. It protects the brain from harmful substances by excluding them from entering into the parenchyma from blood circulation and is strongly expressed in the endothelial cells at the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This antibody is well suited for WB and fresh frozen IHC applications.

Outstainding Guinea pig antibody against Kir4.1

Astrocyte membranes are highly permeable to K+ ions, leading to a hyperpolarized resting membrane potential and low input membrane resistance. The main player in mediating these properties is the Kir4.1 inward rectifying K+ channel, also referred to as KCNJ10 or Kir1.2. While Kir4.1 is not expressed on neurons, it is expressed in a variety of CNS glia, including oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes. The Kir4.1 channels occur throughout the brain, but are found in the highest concentrations in the olfactory bulb, cerebellum, brain stem, spinal cord, retina and midbrain. With this antibody you can achive beautiful results in WB, ICC, IHC and fresh frozen IHC.
